Parks and Recreation

  • Spearheaded National Historic Site Status for the Memorial Tower at the Dingle
  • Obtained over $6.5 Million in funding for extensive renovation of Sir Sandford Fleming Park
  • Initiated the Dingle Natal Day Party which just celebrated a very successful 9th year
  • Convinced Council to purchase the former CN Rail Line and establish the Chain of Lakes Trail
  • Established the Deadman’s Island Park and obtained National Historic Site Status for Deadman’s Island and Melville Island
  • New facilities at Chocolate Lake Beach and retrofit of the Captain William Spry Centre
  • Accessible playground, park upgrades and service dog park in Ardmore Park

Value For Tax Dollars

 

  • Advocated to the province to hold the line on residential property assessment and keep CAP
  • Brought forward the issue of overtime and spending waste at HRM, which has greatly reduced unnecessary overtime and saved millions
  • Working with the Quinpool Road  Mainstreet District Association to advocate Council establish a reduced small business tax rate.

Safety and Security

  • Worked extensively with Halifax Regional Police and Community Response to target vandalism and graffiti vandals and combat associated crimes
  • Convinced HRM staff and council to approve a 311 centre so that there will only be one number to access City Hall, also reducing non-emergency calls to our 911 centre
  • Obtained approval for a mobile command centre to take to any emergency site to enhance response during major incidents
  • As Chair of Halifax Board of Police Commissioners spearheaded a ten year strategic plan for Halifax Regional Police and established a continuous board training program

Traffic and Transportation

  • Coordinated with public works to have many bike lanes installed in district and supported new protected bike lanes downtown
  • Convinced the Province of Nova Scotia to amend the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act to prohibit parking in bike lanes
  • Convinced the Traffic Authority and Council to approve the use of pedestrian count down signals to enhance public safety
  • Obtained sidewalk snow removal on main and residential roads under the general tax rate for pedestrian safety
  • Based on residents requests for transit, established a new bus route

Environment

  • Spear headed the Urban Forest Master Plan
  • Obtained Council approval to consider a green plan
  • Initiated infill regulations to provide protection for the Northwest Arm
  • Obtained Council approval for a new policy to ensure there is no smoking in HRM outdoor parks, sports fields and beaches where children may be present

Planning and Development

  • Pushed for enforcement when developers disregard regulations. Instead of a $250 ticket it can now be up to $5000
  • Worked to ensure Cowie Hill kept their wiring underground
  • Initiated the Herring Cove Road Streetscape study and associated funding for projects
  • Was a primary driver to initiate and develop a Regional Plan
  • Stressed the need to make our Downtown Halifax more vibrant including the Central Library
  • Did not support development applications that were not compatible with planning policies and communities
  • Spear headed the Urban Forest Master Plan
  • Obtained Council approval to consider a green plan

Seniors and Persons With Disabilities

 

  • Developed the service dog park and accessible playground at Ardmore Park
  • New accessible regional playground for the Dingle – Fall 2016
  • Increased the seniors and persons with disabilities snow removal program by $200,000 to meet the demand that we could not fulfill last year and accommodate future demand
  • Based on resident requests ensured we had a consistent level of sidewalk snow clearing throughout the municipality
  • Changed practise to have all public meetings in Council chambers close captioned
