I am very pleased that the former Minister of Environment approved the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada’s recommendation and granted our request for National Historic Site status for Melville Island and Deadman’s Island. A plaque has been made and  a dedication ceremony was held during the US Memorial Day Service (May 30, 2016).  Not only are we fortunate to have many historical areas in our district, but we also have many great residents who recognize the importance of our history. They volunteer their time to protect and support these valuable monuments of the past.  Some of these community members form groups; such as the Mainland South Heritage Association, who assisted in commemorating this special designation.
